Exhibition PARK, Amsterdam City Archives.

From the 28th of januari a selection of my project PARK will be shown at the Amsterdam City Archives.

Urban parks offer city dwellers convenient slices of nature at walking or cycling distance. Amsterdam contains 21 such areas and Jeroen Hofman (1976) visited them all over the past two years. This project, commissioned by the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts and the City Archives, resulted in a series of photographs titled Amsterdam PARK. As in his earlier project Playground, on training grounds used by the police, army and fire service (published in book form in 2011), he used a cherry picker to take the photos from an elevated viewpoint. While the urban landscape has been the preferred subject for many photographers from the 1970s onwards, Jeroen Hofman shows us green oases that seem very far removed from the asphalt jungle. These are areas of artificial nature people use to their hearts’ content, for parties, exercise and recreation, or simply to enjoy quietly. The panoramic viewpoint and warm colours make these photographs seem like serene landscapes at first. However, the astounding richness of detail captured by the view camera means you keep spotting new things as the park visitors go about their activities, thinking themselves unobserved. Looking closely, we see small scenes of ordinary happiness unfold before our eyes.
